3.6 Stroke across the chest, over the shoulders, and up the neck.

CHEST

If the mother’s breasts are sore, or if she is lactating, it is advisable to ask about the tenderness before proceeding with the massage. And if the father has a hairy chest, this massage may be difficult for the provider or uncomfortable if his hair is pulled. Use extra lubrication to avoid this problem.

1. With the heels of your palms, stroke alternately from shoulder to breastbone (see illustration 3.7).

2. With your thumbs, alternately stroke from one side of his chest across to the other shoulder.

3. Repeat the first stroke three more times.
